Food handler certificate in Spain for foreigners: 2026 guide
If you want to work in a bar, restaurant, hotel kitchen, supermarket, bakery or care home in Spain, the first thing an employer will ask is: "¿Tienes el carnet de manipulador?" — do you have your food handler card? Here is everything you need to know, in plain English.
What is the "carnet de manipulador de alimentos"?
It is proof that you have been trained in food hygiene. Since Royal Decree 109/2010 there is no longer a government-issued card: under EU Regulation (EC) 852/2004 (Annex II, Chapter XII) every food business must make sure its staff are trained for the work they do. The proof is a training certificate from a training provider, which your employer keeps and shows to health inspectors. Everyone still calls it the "carnet".
Can I get it in English?
Yes. The law requires training appropriate to your job; it does not say it must be in Spanish. Learning in a language you understand is the best way to actually apply it at work. At ManipuladorYa you can study and take the exam in English (or French, Romanian, Arabic, Chinese, Ukrainian, Portuguese or Spanish).
Your certificate is issued in Spanish and English, so a Spanish inspector can read it, and it states that you took the course in English.
What do I need?
- A passport, NIE or national ID. You do not need an NIE to get trained.
- An email address and a phone or computer.
- To pass a multiple-choice exam (7 out of 10 correct, unlimited free attempts).
Write your name exactly as on your passport or NIE so it matches your employment contract.
What does the course cover?
Types of contamination, foodborne illnesses, personal hygiene and handwashing, safe temperatures for storage and cooking, cleaning and disinfection, pest control, labels and dates, and the 14 allergens that must be declared in the EU. It is based on manuals from the FAO and WHO/PAHO.
How much and how long?
The course and exam are free. If you pass, the certificate costs €19.90, or €27.90 with the allergen certificate (what hospitality employers ask for most). It takes about an hour and you download the PDF immediately.
Does it help me get a job?
Absolutely. Having it before your interview shows you can start straight away. Keep it on your phone and add the certificate number to your CV.
Other paperwork for working in Spain
Besides food hygiene training, to work as an employee in Spain you need the right to work (depending on your nationality or residence permit) and a Social Security number. Your employer registers you. If you are unsure about your situation, ask at the immigration office (oficina de extranjería) or a migrant support organisation.
